Mottledleaf's eyes were set intently on bundles and piles herbs before her, each set in to their own little hole at the back of her den. The holes were deep enough that stems stood straight up and poked out to the surface rather than just lying flat on the ground. That took up too much space and was too easy to mess up - that was how her mentor had kept them. Now that she was officially in charge, she had changed it up and made it more organized and easier to keep clean and sorted.
She had just pulled the goldenrod out of its spot to make sure that it was all still fresh when she heard the soft sound of paws at the entrance to her den. She pressed the herbs to the ground with one paw and swiveled her head around. "Yes?" She asked whoever had entered her den.

Swanpaw stepped gingerly into the den, careful not to use her front right paw where the splinter was lodged. Her fur was slightly matted from all the playing she had done earlier with the other 'paws, and she was still slightly damp from swimming in the river. "I uh.. Got a splinter," she answered, holding out her paw. Swanpaw felt embarrassed, this wasn't the type of injury a warrior gets. She looked away from Mottledleaf, thinking that she probably found this amusing. Swanpaw looked at the piles of herbs around her, and breathed in all the scents. She always had liked the smell of the medicine cat den. It smelled fresh and clean. Swanpaw squirmed, anxious to get back outside. "It rea- I mean, kinda hurts. I think it bled a little too," she added, a note of pride at the end.

Mottledleaf rose to her feet when she saw the apprentice delicately stepping around. Upon saying that she had a spinter, the blue torbie signalled with her head for the apprentice to come in.
"Well don't just stand there," she said with an amused purr. "Come on, let me see - and don't be afraid to be in pain, sweetie, it's a sign that you're alive." She waited for the apprentice to come forward, eying her herbs for a moment. Worst case scenario, she would need a bit of cobwebs to stop the bleeding after the splinter was removed, she figured.

Swanpaw slowly stepped towards the medicine cat, and stuck out her paw once more. A sign of being alive, she thought. She liked that- she was alive. "It hurts a lot then," she meowed, proud to be alive. "Is it really bad?" Swanpaw asked, a hint of worry in her voice as she saw Mottledleaf looking at her paw. She hoped she wouldn't have to eat any of those yucky leaves that she had to chew when she had a cough.

Mottledleaf purred as the apprentice found relief in her statement. She glanced at the paw - the splinter itself was on the bigger side, but there was enough on the outside that she would hopefully be able to get a grip on it and remove it effortlessly. There was blood oozing around the outside, so she figured it would definitely bleed as well. She grabbed a small amount of cobwebs to wrap it up, and got enough herbs to make a small pit of a healing poultice. Splinters rarely got infected, but she wasn't the type to take the risk.
"It's rather big, so it will probably hurt when I remove it, and even bleed a bit more," she explained, signalling with her head for the apprentice to sit down. "But it's better that it's bigger - it's the small ones that are harder to remove."

Swanpaw hesitated upon hearing her words before nodding and slowly sitting down. "I uh, don't have to eat leaves.. right?" she asked, her voice full of worry when she saw the bundle of herbs Mottledleaf had gathered. She glanced down at her paw and widened her eyes when she saw the blood around the splinter lodged in her right fore-paw. Swanpaw didn't mind the sight of blood- unless it was her own. Her stomach lurched and she suddenly felt like throwing up. Breathing in and out slowly in an attempt to ease the churning in her stomach, Swanpaw closed her eyes and stiffened, bracing herself for the pain.

"I can give you something to calm you down, you seem to be rather nervous, but besides that I don't think you will need to eat any herbs. I don't think you'll even need the ones I have out, in honesty." The medicine cat said with a purr, and then she proceeded to delicately remove the splinter with her teeth. It came out quickly once she got hold of it, and a little bit of blood proceeded to leak out. The wound was puncture-like and could have been a lot worse, but she could only imagine how painful the little thing was.
"Keep your paw up," she instructed, and she decided against the poultice. She applied a bit of cobweb to the pad to stop the bleeding, and then looked at Swanpaw. "There. All done. Your paw might hurt for a little bit, but you'll be fine."

Swanpaw winced as the splinter was pulled out by the tortoiseshell. She looked down at her throbbing paw as Mottledleaf put cobwebs on it. "Thank you," she said, still feeling lightheaded after seeing her own blood. Swanpaw sat down, her head spinning. "I..I feel a little.." she couldn't finish her sentence, her freshkill from earlier felt like it was in her throat. Swanpaw gagged slightly, and looked down at the floor, embarrassed at her reaction of seeing blood. Warriors aren't afraid of anything! she told herself. Her stomach lurched once more and Swanpaw looked up at the medicine cat, hoping she could tell what was wrong.

Mottledleaf watched the young apprentice begin to lurch, and she swiftly got to her paws and picked up a leaf from one of her many piles.
"Lie down," she instructed in a calm voice. "If you're going to be sick, be sick. But otherwise I have something that can probably calm you down." She figured the apprentice probably felt bad about her reaction to her blood, so the blue torbie ran her tail along Swanpaw's back. "It's okay to be bothered by your blood. It's not something that's meant to be outside of your body, after all."

Swanpaw nodded quickly, still breathing heavily in an attempt to calm her stomach. She laid down slowly, trying not to move so much. Her first day of training was tomorrow, and there was no way she was going to miss that. "O-okay. What do I have to take?" she asked shakily. Being a warrior meant the world to her, and if eating bitter leaves was the only way to make her feel better, so be it. Plus, her mentor was Whiskerstar, the leader of Riverclan. Swanpaw looked up to him, he was such a big influence on her. She wanted to be leader someday, after all.

"You can take chamomile to calm your nerves a bit," the medicine cat mewed in return as she grabbed one of the white and yellow flowers. She held back a purr - the apprentice seemed like the whole world was ending because she got a bit queasy about her own blood. She was young, and she would grow used to it. "If that doesn't help, you're welcome to just lie down here until you're feeling better. I promise it will pass."
She nudged the flower towards Swanpaw. "Want to know a secret? I also threw up the first time I was really involved with blood, too."

Swanpaw tore a little petal off the flower. Its strong taste wasn't too bad, she decided, so she licked the flower up and ate it. Upon hearing Mottledleaf's words, she looked up at the torbie with rounded, pastel green eyes. "You were?" she asked in shock. Swanpaw always thought that medicine cats didn't really care about blood, after all, it is what they choose to do. Then again, Swanpaw would probably see a lot of her own blood as a warrior. "How did you get over it?"

"The first few times it was really weird. You're seeing someone's life force drain from their body, and it affected me in ways that I don't like remembering," Mottledleaf said to the apprentice, sitting down in front of her. She licked her paw and groomed the corner of her face as the apprentice ate up the flower. Her yellow-orange eyes gazed affectionately upon the younger cat. "Experience, mostly. After seeing so much, it stops affecting you as much, and eventually you don't feel sick any more. Blood still bothers me, in the sense that it generally means that someone's hurt and a cat in pain isn't a sight I like to see, but you stop feeling queasy."
"You know one time I did threw up? The first time I helped deliver kits. I thought Silverwhisker was going to scratch my ears off of my head!" She let out a purr, figuring that hearing about how she had responded to such situations when she was younger would probably make the apprentice feel better about her own nauseous reaction. "I was hardly more than your age, too."

A purr escaped the gray dappled she-cat, her whiskers twitching in amusement. "I can't believe she didn't," she joked. Swanpaw got up and walked to back to the entrance of the den. "Thanks, Mottledleaf. I feel a lot better now," she meowed. "It's getting late and well, I'm training with Whiskerstar tomorrow." Swanpaw said with pride. She still couldn't get over the fact that he chose to mentor her, for whatever reason. Swanpaw wasn't anything spectacular when it came to fighting, and she certainly wasn't a prodigy at hunting. Maybe he just likes me, she thought. Her insides felt fuzzy when she told herself that, and smiled a little to herself. "See ya, Mottledleaf! Oh, and if you ever need any herbs or whatever just ask me."

"Whiskerstar couldn't have picked a better apprentice for himself," the torbie purred as Swanpaw climbed to her feet. She had fixed an ailment and make an apprentice feel a bit better about herself all in one go, and that pleased her. She loved the whole Clan like they were her own kits, and given that she couldn't bear her own, she was very comfortable with that. She would do anything to make a Clanmate feel a bit better.
"Sleep well, Swanpaw," she purred. "I'm sure that Whiskerstar will want you at your peak tomorrow."
