The crescent moon rose high as the sky blackened and Silverpelt made itself visible. Crickets and other insects chirped softly and a lone owl could be heard in the distance. The wind howled quietly through the forest, ruffling the fur of any ShadowClan cat still awake. In the center of camp, Wintermoon stretched out, reaching his paws towards the sky. He watched as mosquitoes danced in front of his eyes, wondering what purpose they served, other than to suck the blood of others for their own survival. The white tom cat sat up, unable to rest. He flicked his ears as the mosquitoes became aware of his presence and made an attempt to swarm him. Pesky things. He decided to go for a stroll- perhaps he’d get sleepy by the time he returned and would be able to get some rest. Wintermoon stood and wandered over to the edge of the camp and into the forest, careful not to wake any of his clanmates.

The jet black leader padded out into the piney forest for some fresh air when she scented the presents of another cat. Shadowclan scent so safe. Following the scent she noticed one of her warriors, Wintermoon and approached the tom with her yellow eyes flickering in the dim light."Greetings Wintermoon, You enjoying a nice walk at moon high I suppose?"
Sitting down, she studied the toms gaze at the moon and smiled kindly at him as a sign of trust. Wintermoon was one of her best warriors and she had always admired him since she was a kit. He was just a few moons older then her and was much calmer. He was mature for a tom. Waiting for an reply she looked up at the moon herself and remarked,"It is quite gorgeous at night isn't it?"

At the far end of the Shadowclan camp, there seemed to be silence. A few crickets chirped quietly, and a lone frog could be heard croaking gently every so often. Nightwish shivered as the cold wind wrapped itself around her, making her dig her claws into the branch she was perched on. She shut her eyes tightly, craving the darkness of sleep to wash over her. She found peace only in sleep, in dreams of warmth and love. Two things she never knew. An especially strong wind blew over the forest, causing the tree to quiver and shake. Nightwish gasped audibly and clung to the tree tightly. As the tree stilled, she looked up at Silverpelt and smiled slightly. The night sky was so beautiful, so soothing.. She sighed and closed her eyes once more, sleep slowly washing over her.

Wintermoon pricked his ears at the sound of his leader’s voice. “Ah, hello Jaystar. You startled me.” He forced a smile, trying not to let his annoyance show. He would have loved some quiet. Though he decided he shouldn’t let this bother him. After all, if he wanted to win over his leader’s trust, or rather keep it, he’d have to deal with her conversation. “Indeed it is.” Wintermoon responded to Jaystar’s comment. “I’ve always found the moon peaceful. Emptying itself then filling back up. It’s a reminder that when things seem to be falling apart, everything will come back together in the end.” He paused, rethinking his words. “Not that anything’s falling apart, of course,” he corrected himself and smiled once more. He glanced at Jaystar, studying her reaction.

The black she-cat giggled as she noticed his annoyance and meowed with amusement,"Please don't force a smile there is no point." Turning around she flicked her tail and called to him as she walked back to camp,"Enjoy your walk."
Padding back into camp she was comforted by the sounds of sleeping cats, this is how it should be, she told herself with a smile. Making her way towards the leaders den she saw with a flash in her eye that a she-cat was struggling to get comfortable and sighed, these cats always had the roughest times sleeping! Shaking her black head she went into her den and sat down in her nest, she felt something was off... But she didn't know what.

Nightwish awoke with jolt, nearly sending herself falling to the ground. She clung to the tree as she tried to catch her breath. It was just a dream, calm down. She leaned against the tree and sighed, still shaken. Slowly, Nightwish pushed herself up and climbed down the tree. She looked around, trying to see through the thick forest surrounding her. Every nerve was on end still and she could hear every little thing scampering about. "It was just a dream... Just a dream.." her voice wavered at the end as she started to walk down to the lake rather quickly. As the trees started to thin, her breath slowly returned to normal. Nightwish gazed at the moon, keeping a safe distance from the water lapping at the shore.

As Jaystar left, Wintermoon felt uncomfortable so he began wandering through the forest. He hated when his emotions could be read so clearly. Though he brushed off the feeling and glanced back at the moon as he walked. The moon symbolised much to him. It was a part of his name, after all. When all is seemingly going downhill, what is right will come back around. He had nothing to worry about. Though there was still something else that bothered him. The moon is not a star. It never will be. So how could he hope to one day be Winterstar? Perhaps his dream was little more than a childish wish. Something then caught the tom's attention. A rustle in the overgrowth beside him. Surely not Jaystar. He decided to follow the being. He caught scent of a cat. A cat from ShadowClan? Maybe, but not anyone he immediately recognised. Wintermoon's curiosity got the better of him as he padded swiftly after the cat. He stopped as a shape became visible. He pondered the idea of this being a rouge- quite a smart one at that. Being so well hidden in the territory of clan cats is not an easy feat.

Her dreamlike state was quickly ended as she caught the scent of another cat. Nightwish tensed and turned around, eyes searching for the cat. She knew she should run, but she couldn't. It was like she was frozen, yet she wasn't afraid. No, this wasn't fear. Nervousness? Perhaps. Not fear. She dug her claws into the soft mud and tried to make out a figure in the darkness. "Who's there?" she whispered, her voice disappearing into the night.

He knew there was no retreating from the situation, so Wintermoon stepped forward, revealing himself. He took note of the she-cat's appearance, her most distiguishing features being her tall stature, a scar on her muzzle, and her captivating eyes of a violet colour. For Wintermoon, this cat seemed all too familiar. "Nightpaw, what a wonderful surprise. Have you really been here, in ShadowClan territory, all this time?" Nightwish, or Nightpaw as he knew her, had left the clan six moons prior. Wintermoon had just seen his fourth season at the time of her take off. "How have you been? Or rather, where?" He was truly curious of the answer, for once. She had left so suddenly, without so much as a good bye.

"I... It's Nightwish now..." she answered softly. She remembered him vaguely, of course they weren't apprentices anymore, he certainly wasn't. She studied him with interest, he really had changed, no longer the scrawny apprentice she remembered. Why was he interested in where she's been? "I've been.. around. Mostly in the forest outside of the clans." She searched his cold blue eyes, feeling a strange fluttering sensation in her stomach when she met his gaze. "Why are you out here?" she questioned, tilting her head slightly.

Nightwish, now. She had chosen to continue the rituals of clan life despite not being a clan cat. This intrigued Wintermoon. The she-cat seemed to retain some sort of respect for the clans. "I couldn't sleep. I'd assume you have similar reasons for wandering around at moon high." Wintermoon stepped closer and sat beside his former clan mate. He was aware of the implications- it was against the clan's code to be doing as he was. Though, unlike Nightwish, he held very little respect for the clan's way of life. Perhaps the she-cat could shed some insight on other clans. Or maybe she truly disliked ShadowClan and would be able to help him in his quest. This, however, he did not know and figured he'd keep his mouth shut on the matter. At least for the time being until he figured out her true feelings.

She gave him a confused look as he sat next to her, heat rising to her face. She hadn't really talked to another cat in awhile. Sure, she'd met a few rouges, even a kittypet every now and then. Clan cats, however, were more familiar even though she had felt such an outcast while she was still in Shadowclan. She found that she had been staring at him this whole time and quickly looked up at the moon. "I couldn't sleep, I ah... Just... couldn't." There was no way she'd admit to having a nightmare.

Wintermoon gave a soft chuckle as the she-cat quickly averted her gaze. Surely her mind must be racing. Why would a clan cat be speaking so calmly with a rouge? But he hadn't any need to worry- it's not as if she could inform anyone on his wrong doing. "I see." The stuttering of her response led the tom to believe something was troubling Nightwish. He couldn't be sure whether he was that cause, or if it was something else. The conversation seemed to be dwindling though and he wanted to reasure her that he meant no harm. He reflected on his earlier words with Jaystar- innocent chit chat. Nightwish had her eyes focused on the moon. "It is quite gorgeous at night isn't it?" Wintermoon stole the words of his leader. It had caused a lengthy response from himself, having much to do with his outlook on life, so he hoped it would prove the same usefulness in the current situation.

She looked down once more as she heard him chuckle, embarrassed that he had noticed how quickly she had dropped her gaze. "It is. It's... always changing, but things always seem to return to normal. Nothing's ever permanent," she answered without looking away from the sky. "Now the stars, they're permanent. They never leave, they stay with you all night, every night. I trust the stars. The moon just.. Comes and goes as it pleases. It certainly is gorgeous, though." She looked over at Wintermoon, feeling that same strange sensation again. "So uh, what's your warrior name?" Nightwish studied his eyes once more, it was something about those eyes..

The stars are something to trust in. That was certainly a curious idea. How could one trust in something so far away? Perhaps they provide comfort. Besides, according to clan lore, each star was a cat in StarClan. When one felt alone, they could always turn to the stars; their ancestors. The moon was nothing more than a bright sphere, waxing and waning with each night. The tom wandered in his thoughts for a long moment. Then, realising he had been asked a question, he flicked his tail calmly and spoke, "it's Wintermoon." He couldn't help but notice some other emotion coming from the she-cat. The only issue was, he wasn't able to tell what it was. He'd sensed it earlier, but had ignored it. But now whatever it was had returned. Wintermoon swept his gaze across Nightwish's face, trying to recognise her feelings- but still to no avail. Perhaps this emotion was one he himself had not come to feel in his lifetime.
